Although not blessed with the infrastructure of some more popular international diving destinations, the Solomon Islands nevertheless provide some of the most varied and interesting diving opportunities in the entire Pacific region. Popular areas for diving in the Solomon Islands include the area surrounding the capital Honiara (known as 'Iron Bottom Sound'), where there are number of wrecks to explore; and Uepi Island, which boasts some of the best drop-off sites in the Pacific, as well as coral gardens. The pick of the bunch, though, must remain Gizo: home to a variety of WWII-era wrecks, including transport ships, submarines and fighter jets, as well as gorgeous offshore reefs, the waters of Gizo also provide tourists with an up close and personal look at the archipelago's marine life, which includes manta rays and a rich selection of reef fish. Those looking for dive-sites and white-sand beaches should head for the gleaming atolls of Rennell and Bellona. All in all, the Solomon Islands offers some truly fascinating diving opportunities, and - even during the high tourist season - boasts blessedly uncrowded beaches on which to relax after exploring the ocean depths.
