The primary airport serving Ecuador, Mariscal Sucre International Airport is conveniently located near downtown Quito, which is convenient for travellers getting to their hotels but inconvenient in that it prevents the airport from expanding to meet increased traffic. Serving roughly four million passengers each year, the airport can be rather crowded at peak times because of this. A second facility is currently being constructed 11 miles (18km) outside of Quito however, and should be completed in 2012.
The current facility is made up of a single terminal split into national and international areas. Facilities are basic and rather old, but well-maintained, with a few shops and restaurants to browse.
Flights to Mariscal Sucre International Airport come mostly from other destinations in South and Central America, including Panama City, Lima, Bogoto, Caracas and Medellin; however there are some long-haul flights available to major cities like New York, Atlanta, Miami, Amsterdam and Madrid.
The airport is situated three miles (5km) from Quito city centre.
