Madeira Airport (FNC)

Overview

Madeira Airport has several names: it used to be called Santa Catarina Airport, and is locally known as Funchal Airport. Located eight miles (13km) from the city of Funchal, Madeira Airport is a small but busy facility processing more than two million passengers each year.

Considered one of the most unique airports in the world, Madeira Airport is equipped with a runway that extends out over the ocean, supported by 18 columns 230 feet (70m) tall. The structure has won several engineering awards, and has appeared on the History Channel programme Most Extreme Airports.

The airport itself consists of a single terminal, mostly underground. There are a good selection of shops selling local souvenirs, including excellent Madeira wine and traditional cakes; however there are only a few coffee shops and one sit-down restaurant to choose from when you get hungry.

The primary gateway to the island resorts of Portugal, flights to Madeira Airport come in from cities around Europe, including destinations like London, Paris, Oslo, Moscow, Amsterdam, Milan, Glasgow, Helsinki and Vienna; many routes are seasonal however, operating only during peak summer months.

Parking

Parking at Madeira Airport in Lots 5 and 6 is free for the first 45 minutes, then charged at €0.25 every 15 minutes up to €4.50 per day. Long-term parking is charged on a monthly rate of €123 in Lot 1 and €59 in Lots 5 and 6.
