The climate of Phoenix is arid, which means it is hot and dry in summer, and mild and sunny during winter. The city is known as the hottest in the United States, summer temperatures consistently reaching 100°F (38°C) or more. August heat is intensified by the arrival of humid air from the Gulf of California, which brings thunderstorms and occasionally extreme weather conditions like hail storms and tornadoes. Winters are pleasant with sunny days and occasional morning frost and fog. Snow is a rarity, but light falls have been recorded. Rain, too, is scarce in Phoenix, the average annual total being 8.5 inches (210mm).
