Los Angeles enjoys a pleasant climate with warm, dry summers and cooler, wet winters. In summer high temperatures are offset along the coastal areas by offshore breezes, but in the canyons and valleys of the interior temperatures can reach torrid levels. Most rain falls in the winter months. The region is also susceptible to smog, which becomes trapped in the coastal basin. Hot, dry winds, known as the Santa Ana, also plague Los Angeles on occasion.
