Restaurants in Siem Reap
Siem Reap is fast becoming a tourist hub and now has a large variety of restaurants that cater to visitors. It is easy to find traditional Cambodian (or Khmer) food as well as Western staples; in fact, pizza dominates many a Siem Reap menu.
There are a few districts offering plenty of variety: the Old Market area boasts a wonderful assortment of restaurants, as do Wat Bo Road and Sivatha Street. Pub Street is a great favourite among tourists and although, as the name suggests, it is most famous for its bars, there are a handful of great eating places too. Phsar Chas is home to a group of restaurants selling local food which caters specifically to the sensibilities of tourists. Most restaurants stay open late and it is easy to find reasonably priced food.
If you are travelling on a budget, or simply need your fast food fix, you'll be happy to hear that chains like KFC and Pizza Company can also be found in Siem Reap. However, the local markets, like the Old Market (Psar Chaa), are also exciting and wallet-friendly places to sample local cuisine.
Khmer cuisine is one of the world's oldest living cuisines and is generally considered a healthy cooking tradition. Make sure you try the national dish, Fish Amok, cooked with coconut milk, chillies, onion and spinach and served with rice in banana leaves. For the more adventurous there are exotic Khmer staples like tarantulas and red tree ants.
