What to see in Siem Reap

Siem Reap Attractions

There are plenty of things to see and do in Siem Reap for tourists, though the top attractions in the area can actually be found just outside the city. The most notable sightseeing destination is the famous Angkor Archeological Park which stretches over 170 square miles (400 sq km) and houses some of the most important archeological sites in Asia. The park contains the magnificent remains of several monuments and buildings from the ancient Khmer Empire (9th to 15th century), including the largest pre-industrial city in the world. The most famous sites include the Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its myriad impressive sculptures. Further afield in the park, temples like Beng Mealea nestle in the jungle awaiting the more adventurous and those who like to avoid the press of tourists. The Angkor temples can easily occupy visitors for several days, particularly as the landscapes of the Angkor Archeological Park are in themselves beautiful and interesting.

There are several notable tourist attractions within Siem Reap, including the Angkor National Museum, which is a useful complement to the archeological wonders of the Angkor Temples. This modern museum boasts impressive galleries of artefacts taken from the temple complex or enriching to an understanding of Khmer history and culture. The other not-to-be-missed museum in Siem Reap is rather a different experience: Aki Ra's Landmine Museum lays out the modern strife of a country still struggling with landmines and other such weapons.

A popular activity for tourists in Siem Reap is a visit to Psar Chaa (the Old Market), a bustling collection of merchant stalls. This is a good venue not only for shopping but to experience daily life in Siem Reap and meet some of the locals.
