Santiago has a Mediterranean climate, characterised by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Most rain falls in the coolest time of year between May and August. Temperatures in the winter months seldom drop below freezing, and summers bring sunny days averaging around 30ºC. The city is prone to spells of air pollution during winter, when temperature inversions cause smog to be trapped in the valley.
