What to see in Larnaca

Larnaca Attractions

There is plenty to see and do in Larnaca, with visitors able to relax in a gorgeous Mediterranean setting before exploring impressive archaeological sites. Most famous of these is the ancient city of Kition, the ruins of which can be explored along the lovely coastline.

The rich historical importance of Larnaca runs even further into the past. Just outside the town lie the excavations of Choirokoitia, a Neolithic settlement and UNESCO World Heritage Site said to date back to around 7000 BC.

Numerous artefacts are preserved in Larnaca's museums, the best of which are the Larnaca District Museum and the Larnaca Medieval Museum, located within the walls of the thrilling 12th century Larnaca Castle.

Larnaca is blessed with a number of significant religious institutions. The Church of Avios Lazaros is really special, with a richly decorated interior and proud history. The Hala Sultan Tekke is a striking Muslim monument and mosque set in the landscape's complex of salt lakes close to the airport.

The famous Stavrovouni Monastery makes for a great excursion from the city. It's the oldest monastery in Cyprus and is said to contain an important relic: a fragment of the Holy Cross. Regrettably, women are not permitted inside this Greek Orthodox monastery.

For those more interested in the sand and the sea, the main town beach of Finikoudes is very popular. Larnaca is a dream destination for divers, with numerous technical and recreational dives. One of the most worthwhile dives is the viewing of the Wreck of the Zenobia.
