Tallinn has a temperate climate, with some extremes of temperature between seasons. Summers are usually warm and winters are generally severe. The average summer temperature in the city is 70°F (21°C), with temperatures dropping to an average of 18°F (-8°C) in winter (November to mid-March). Heavy snowfall is common in winter, and a constant layer of snow on the ground remains between December and March. Situated on the Baltic Sea, Tallinn experiences fresh sea breezes, which moderate temperatures, as well as some humidity. Due to its northern latitudes, summer daylight hours are long (with the longest at 19 hours) and winter days are dark, sometimes with only six hours of daylight. Rainfall can occur throughout the year, though August is the wettest month and an umbrella and light raincoat are recommended.
