The climate of Helsinki is maritime/continental, with warm to hot summers and very cold winters. The hottest month is July, when temperatures have been known to reach 86°F (30°C), but in general summer days are long, mild and sunny, daylight lasting up to 19 hours. Winters, by contrast, are bitterly cold and the city is covered in snow. The mercury hovers well below freezing, and locals have been known to dare walking across the frozen sea. Helsinki experiences spring in around April, when the long, dark days of winter begin to lighten.
