The climate of Munich is continental, but the nearby Alps have an influence on the weather. Summers are mild to warm and wet, thunderstorms fairly common. In winter it is very cold, but snow is rarely heavy. South westerly winds known as the Föhn blow in from the Alps on odd days any time of year, causing brief, drastic rises in temperature. Another weather condition, the Alpenstau, is also sometimes experienced during spring and summer, when north-westerly winds cross the mountains, bringing unseasonable cold, wet weather and sometimes snow.
