What to see in Saronic Gulf Islands
Saronic Gulf Islands Attractions
There is plenty to see and do on the Saronic Gulf Islands and they are tirelessly popular getaways from Athens for Greeks and international tourists. Each island has its own flavour and offers different activities and attractions for visitors.
Aegina is the closest island to Athens and its popularity and proximity have turned it into a kind of holidaymakers suburb of the city with some lovely beaches. The island is cosmopolitan and busy but has a rich and fascinating history evident in attractions like the Temple of Aphaia and the monastery at Agios Nektarios.
Hydra is considered the most beautiful of the Saronic Islands and has many cultural attractions like museums and galleries to entertain visitors. Hydra's main port is quaint and picturesque, with steep cobbled roads, and despite the booming tourist industry it has retained its charm and character; this is partly because no cars are allowed, making donkeys, bicycles and feet the most popular methods of transport.
Poros is known for its wooded, mountainous scenery and a jolly nightlife. Apart from the exciting nighttime revelry in the waterfront area, attractions on the island include an Archaeological Museum, Bourtzi Castle, and the Sanctuary of Poseidon. Poros also has a few great beaches to enjoy.
Spetses is expensive but the island is enchanting. An enclave for wealthy Athenians, the island does not generally attract package tourists. It is somewhat less crowded than islands like Aegina but is still extremely popular with luxury travellers. There are wonderful hiking and swimming opportunities on Spetses, and the port of Dapia is endearingly picturesque with an old-fashioned charm.
The island of Agistri is also very lovely and has a relaxed atmosphere. The nightlife may not be as vibrant as some of the other Saronic Islands but it is a wonderful destination for families. The beaches are splendid; Skala village has one of the best, which happens to be ideal for children.
