What to see in Thassos
The beautiful island of Thassos has many attractions for visitors on holiday. The 7th-century ruins of Ancient Thassos are still evident in Limenas today, and the 12th-century Archangelou Michail Monastery in the south-east of the island is another interesting site. There are some lovely beaches to relax on, as well as a couple of lakes and waterfalls to enjoy. Thassos also has a number of interesting museums and archaeological sites to visit, and an excellent streetmarket to browse through.
There are a number of small villages that are pleasant to visit, including the traditional Panagia, quiet Scala Rahoniou, and picturesque Kazaviti. The appeal of Thassos lies in the feeling that these places are still relatively undiscovered and traditional life feels authentic and undisturbed. Many of the little villages have their own quaint folk museums and markets to enjoy.
Thassos is a good holiday destination for people with children. There are a few beaches on the island that kids love; the water at Scala Potamia and Golden Beach is quite calm, making them very child-friendly beaches. The Makryammos resort has great facilities for kids, favourites being the mini-zoo and playground. There is also horseback riding on Thassos Island, available at the Pegasus Riding Centre in Theologos, and Pine Tree Paddock in Rachoni.
