What to see in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki Attractions

This ancient city is a treasure trove of attractions and visitors will find plenty of options when deciding what to see and do in Thessaloniki.

Thessaloniki is packed full of archaeological wonders, with a wealth of early Christian, Roman and Byzantine relics. Some of the greatest attractions of Thessaloniki are the famous churches strewn about the city, some of the most spectacular of which are the Church and Crypt of Ayios Dimitrios, the Church of Ayia Sofia, and the Rotonda of Saint George. Many of the monuments of Thessaloniki are UNESCO-listed heritage sites and you can visit most of them on a stroll around the city. Two popular and interesting landmarks are the Roman Forum, situated in the ancient Greek agora, and the White Tower, an iconic building with a long and bloody history. There are also world-class museums to be explored, including the Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum, which is considered one of the best in Europe. Two other fascinating museums are the Museum of Byzantine Culture and the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki.

A little further afield there are incredible archaeological sites to be explored for those who want to take excursions out of Thessaloniki. Vergina - or ancient Aigai - holds the tomb of Alexander the Great's father and was the place where the young Alexander grew up. At this UNESCO World Heritage Site visitors can marvel at the ancient palace complex and theatre as well as numerous royal tombs. Mount Athos, with its mysterious monasteries and rugged scenery is also close by, although only men are allowed to visit and a permit is necessary. If you want to pay your respects to the ancient Greek gods a hike up Mount Olympus, the tallest mountain in Greece, may be in order.

Thessaloniki is a pleasant city to explore on foot. However, it does have an efficient and extensive bus service. Taxis are plentiful and easily available throughout the city. If you are planning to head off on jaunts into the surrounding areas it may be worth hiring a car as this is a pleasant way to see the country but there are also frequent bus trips to the more famous sites.
