Shopping in Zakynthos will not go unrewarded; the island has a vast array of goods to entice visitors. The main shopping area is Alexander Street in Zakynthos town, but there are also gift and souvenir shops at many of the holiday resorts. Usually the resort shops are rather commercial in their offerings so while they are useful for the odd item, clothes and any touristy souvenirs you may want, it is best to make an effort to buy genuine crafts from the locals or to explore the markets and stalls in the villages - where you are almost certain to get better deals as well. It is not difficult to find great local produce in Zante, which has a vibrant shopping scene. Shoppers in Zakynthos will find everything from designer labels, jewellery and leather goods to embroidery, olive wood carvings and ceramics. The most popular Zakynthos souvenirs include locally produced mandolato (nougat) and cheese. During peak summer the shopping hours are quite long and many of the shops catering to tourists don't close over lunch, but those visiting off-season may find that many of the shops and restaurants are closed or have reduced hours.
