Airports in Honolulu

Honolulu International Airport (HNL)

Overview

Honolulu International Airport is the main gateway to the idyllic beaches of Hawaii. Serving more than 21 million passengers each year, the airport is one of the busiest in the US, with more than 300,000 annual flights coming from the US mainland and Asia.

The airport's three terminals were built in the 1960s, and the design hasn't changed much. First-time visitors often find the layout confusing, and the lack of signs can make transferring between terminals difficult. Most international flights and flights from the US mainland are processed through the Overseas Terminal, while the Commuter Terminal and Interisland Terminal are for short flights within Hawaii.

Honolulu International Airport is located about five miles (8km) from Honolulu itself, and there is good and efficient public transport into the city.

Location

The airport is located on Oahu Island about six miles (10km) west of downtown Honolulu and nine miles (15km) west of Waikiki Beach.

Getting to the city

There are several city bus services that follow different routes and schedules connecting to central Waikiki. Many hotels offer pick-up services; if not the Airport Waikiki Express shuttle bus meets all flights and drops off at hotels along Waikiki Beach. Taxis are also available; the ride to Waikiki Beach takes around 20 minutes and has a flat fare of $30.

Time

GMT -10.
