The climate of Chicago is characterised by sizzling summers and freezing winters, with a pleasantly warm spring and autumn in between. The city's inland situation is offset by its proximity to Lake Michigan, which brings some humidity to the air and slightly moderates temperatures. From June to September Chicago sweats through hot, humid and sunny summers, the heat being more pronounced among the downtown buildings. Evening breezes usually cool things down somewhat. Winters, by contrast, are icy with biting winds, and a great deal of snow. The best time to travel to Chicago is during spring or autumn, when days are bright and warm, and nights frosty.
