Airports in Belfast

Belfast International Airport (BFS)

Overview

Belfast International Airport (BFS) is situated just 11 miles (18km) northwest of Northern Ireland's capital city. A city with a troubled history, Belfast is working hard to try and establish itself as a tourist destination. The chief way in which this is happening is through popular low-cost airlines such as Thomson Airways, Jet2.com, easyJet, Thomas Cook Airlines and Aer Lingus, which offer cheap flights to Belfast, and have ensured that more and more visitors are being turned on to the city's considerable charms. Belfast International still shares its runways with the Royal Air Force's base at Aldergrove, and lucky visitors to the airport will catch a glimpse of the impressive military planes during take-off and landing.

Location

The airport is situated 18 miles (29km) northwest of Belfast.

Getting to the city

The Airport Express operates between the airport and the city centre every 10 minutes from outside the terminal building, 24 hours a day. The journey takes around 25 minutes.

George Best Belfast City Airport (BHD)

Overview

One of Northern Ireland's major airports, George Best Belfast City Airport is named in honour of a legendary footballer who played for Manchester United and England in the 1960s.

The airport is small in size with just a single runway for daily flights, and serves just over three million passengers each year. The terminal is known for its efficiency however, and little amenities like the massage bar and children's play area in addition to a small selection of restaurants and shops make it a pleasant travel hub for flights to and from Belfast.

Flights to George Best Belfast City Airport are available primarily on UK budget carriers, and are available to cities across the UK, as well as a few major European cities and holiday resorts.

Location

The airport is situated a mile (3km) east of Belfast.

Getting to the city

Approved taxis are available outside the terminal building. The Airlink bus service departs every 30 minutes from the airport terminal to the Belfast Europa Bus Centre in the heart of the city. The service runs between 6am and 9.50pm daily at a fare of about £3 for a single journey. Buses also connect the airport to main railway stations.

Time

Local time is GMT (GMT +1 between the last Sunday in March and the Saturday before the last Sunday in October).
