What to see in Lake Superior And Thunder Bay

Lake Superior And Thunder Bay Attractions

At Thunder Bay the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park is a big drawcard, named for the shape of a rocky outcrop at the site that extends into Lake Superior. The Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park, just west of Thunder Bay, is also popular. Ontario Parks boasts 330 parks, attracting more than 10 million visitors annually, and many of these lovely protected areas are clustered near Thunder Bay and around the massive Lake Superior, offering travellers numerous options for outdoor recreation. Lake Nipigon and the township of the same name, close to Thunder Bay, are also a hub for active outdoor pursuits.

Apart from all the hiking, camping and watersports opportunities, there are some cultural diversions in the region: the Amethyst Mine Panorama, which is a working quarry offering walking tours, is a great favourite with visitors and can be a rewarding place to poke around as Thunder Bay sits on one of the largest Amethyst deposits in the world; the Fort William Historical Park, a living history attraction, recreates the days of the North West Company and the Canadian fur trade; and for a good dose of the performing arts, the Magnus Theater gets rave reviews.
