The only certainty about the weather in Ottawa is that it is unpredictable. Winters are usually bitterly cold with plenty of snow and ice, temperatures plunging to well below freezing, and ice storms being experienced. However, relatively warm winter days sometimes occur, and some years snow does not arrive until early January. In summer the weather is warm and humid, temperatures of 30°C (86°F) and above fairly common. Spring and autumn are very uncertain seasons, subject to the surprise of heatwaves or snowfalls.
