Restaurants in Lima

Lima has been declared the 'Gastronomy Capital of the Americas' and it is an extremely rewarding destination for foodies. The city is full of restaurants catering to every taste and budget and there are many international cuisines on offer, although the local Peruvian fare is unsurpassed. Cerviche, the Peruvian national dish, is a delicious seafood dish typically made with fresh raw fish marinated in citrus juices. Peruvian food tends to be spicy and filling, and is becoming increasingly popular outside of South America, as the world discovers staples like quinoa. The best areas in Lima to find good restaurants are the Old Town, Miraflores and Barranco. The cheapest options, for budget travellers, are usually the Chinese and Italian restaurants, although there are many little eateries selling Peruvian food for very reasonable prices. For those hankering for the taste of something familiar, there are lots of fast-food chains in Lima: chains like KFC, Pizza Hut, Subway, McDonalds and Starbucks can be found all over the city. When choosing restaurants, look out for the 'Restaurante Saludable' logo, which is awarded to eateries for cleanliness and good health standards. Also, be aware that restaurants in Lima, especially the more upmarket ones, sometimes add extra service charges of anything between 10 and 30 percent.
