The Harbour Rock
Perched high on a cliff overlooking Hermanus harbour, The Harbour Rock restaurant can rightly boast of one of the best views in the area. The popular brasserie offers a range of seafood and grills, as well as a highly-regarded sushi menu. There's an adjoining bar, The Gecko, if you want to keep your evening going. The Harbour Rock can be a little hard to find at night, but is worth the drive.

Marianas
Marianas is the ultimate in family-style South African hospitality. Located in a house in Stanford, the both the restaurant and gardens are beautifully kept in an English country style. The menu changes daily according to what ingredients are available locally and what Mariana feels like cooking. The restaurant is open for lunch only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 4pm, and its small size means you will need to book ahead. Plan to spend several hours, and wander the garden or play with the dogs between courses. Be advised that the restaurant doesn't accept credit cards.

Le Bon Vivant
This Franschhoek restaurant is the perfect pit stop on a day of wine tasting in the Cape. The relaxed garden setting has a cosy atmosphere and the staff is friendly, including the chatty chef Pierre. The menu is renowned for its interesting combinations, including pork and crayfish, and light afternoon lunches like the Camembert and Zucchini Dumplings. Stay for desserts like the Berries and White Chocolate Mille Feuille or Lemon and Orange Sorbet. The prices may be higher than locals are used to paying, but the experience is generally agreed to be worth it. Closed Wednesdays.

Rust en Vrede
In the heart of the Cape Winelands, many vineyards have restaurants for visitors to stop at along their tour, but Rust en Vrede is at the top of everyone's list, having scooped up numerous South African and international restaurant awards. The menu features sustainable, local ingredients in unusual combinations, and the sommelier is always on-hand to suggest the perfect complement. The large and elegant dining room is pleasant, but for a special occasion book the chef's table near the wine cellar. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Saturday from 7pm.
