Seoul's climate is categorised as having a temperate monsoon climate with four separate seasons, but temperature differences between the hottest part of summer (usually in August) and the depths of winter (particularly in January) are extreme. In winter, expanding Siberian high-pressure zones and prevailing westerly winds influence the city topographically, and temperatures can drop as low as 7°F (-13.7°C). The icy cold days tend to occur in three-day cycles regulated by rising and falling pressure systems, which brings some relief. In summer, the North Pacific high-pressure system brings very hot, humid weather with temperatures often reaching highs of 95°F (35°C). The best time to travel to Seoul is either in spring or autumn, when beautiful blue skies and more moderate temperatures are the norm. The city experiences its heaviest rainfall predominantly during the summer monsoon period between June and September.
