The Costa del Sol was once home to a string of small fishing villages, but the coastline is now dominated by purpose-built resorts and tourist amenities. Visitors will find the coastline very easy to navigate with public transport as tourism is the lifeblood of the region and a major highway connects the many resorts and villages. There is lots to see and do in the Costa del Sol: there are a number of amusement and water parks, many golf courses, and a very active nightlife at many of the resorts, to supplement the beach activities and numerous water sports that are the coastline's greatest attractions.
The Costa del Sol is not known for its cultural wealth as the local flavour has been somewhat swallowed up by the tourist trade, however, those wanting to do some sightseeing won't have to travel far for a taste of the 'real' Spain: the local Andalusian food remains a real treat and can be found in abundance in the many restaurants; those in search of some culture and history will find real Spanish gems just inland, at places like Granada and Ronda; and there are some charming coastal villages that have escaped the excesses of commercialisation and retained their local charm, like Mijas and Nerja.
