As with most Latin American countries, religious festivals are colourful affairs. Festivities and celebrations over Holy Week, the week leading up to Easter Sunday, are a countrywide event celebrated with great enthusiasm in Nicaragua. Each town and city celebrates Holy Week differently and visitors will be spoilt for choice when it comes to picking which town's festival they would like to attend. The towns of Nandaime, San Juan de Oriente, Masaya and San Jose de Gracia celebrate the festival by sending ox-drawn carts carrying pilgrims and flags to the Popoyupa Sanctuary in Rivas. Rivas is a great place to be during Holy Week as it is possible to watch these processions arriving at the sanctuary. Granada celebrates Holy Week by sending an image of Jesus by boat (with hundreds of pilgrims) to 14 of the islands nearby. The town of Leon covers the main streets with colourful sawdust, while Masaya blankets its streets with flowers. No matter where you are in Nicaragua you are almost guaranteed a great show for Easter and this is a special time to be in the country. The locals are usually very welcoming and happy to have foreigners participate.
