Swazi Reed Dance

The Umhlanga, or Reed Dance Ceremony, is a spectacular traditional Zulu and Swazi event held annually in spring over a period of eight days. Tens of thousands of unmarried Swazi women travel from all parts of the country over the first part of the week, culminating in a traditional dance at the Queen Mother's royal residence in Ludzidzini on the seventh day, wearing costumes of skirts and beaded jewellery. The ceremony's official purpose is to encourage chastity among young women, as participants are traditionally virgins.
