International Dixieland Festival
The Dixieland International Jazz Festival in Spain takes place in Tarragona in March each year. The festival aims to promote local jazz artists. Attending some of the concerts and performances during this festival is a great way to experience the local culture and flair of traditional and contemporary Spanish music while on holiday in the area. Many of the performances take place in public places and are open to the public free of charge, occurring in spaces like squares, restaurants, parks, cafes, bars and market places. There are some indoor venues which host the biggest concerts, including the Metropol Theatre and the new Teatre Tarragona. The festival programme usually includes more than 50 jazz performances, attracting some of the biggest names in Spanish jazz. Although many Spanish cities have popular jazz festivals, what sets Tarragona apart is the emphasis on Dixieland jazz, which is the most traditional form of jazz, harkening back to the genre's origins. The festival has been lauded as one of the four most important Dixieland festivals in Europe.
