Cardiff Harbour Festival

Each August, the Cardiff harbourfront comes alive with concerts, markets, nautical demonstrations, performances, lots of people dressed as pirates (there is even a Best Dressed Pirate Competition!), and more food stalls than you could ever hope to sample! Held over a three-day weekend, more than 60,000 people attend the nautically-themed festival, which has a special focus on seafood, with events like the British Fish Craft Championships and the Welsh Oyster Opening Championships. Recently, the Cardiff Harbour Festival has also become the host of the Extreme Sailing Series, presented by Land Rover, which attracts some of the best professional sailors from all over the world, and allows visitors to watch the incredible sailing at very close range as the catamarans speed around the demanding course just a few metres from spectators on the waterfront. All the while, live music booms out from the bandstand, where some wonderful musicians perform. There are lots of fun activities and attractions for children, with theatrical performances, storytelling and circus acts to entertain the little ones. Many of the events are free of charge and open to the public, but some activities and competitions are charged for.
