Up Helly Aa Viking Festival

The Up Helly Aa Viking Festival is the largest fire festival in Europe, held every January in the Shetland Islands to mark the end of winter solstice. The festival includes enormous parades of hundreds of Viking warriors, who march through the town centre in order to set a longship alight in a re-enactment of ancient Norse traditions. After the ship is set on fire, the Vikings (and curious onlookers) head back into town for a night of partying at various venues across the city.
