Held each year in February in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, this carnival is the second biggest in the world - after Rio's effort - and the most important occasion on the Tenerife annual calendar. The carnival consists of an extravagant procession through the streets of the capital, and hundreds of less formal gatherings, parties and events around the city. The week-long event starts the Announcement Parade on Friday, before the dancing and feasting of the weekend events. Carnival concludes at the end of the week with Piñata weekend.
