One of the Hamburg's biggest annual summer festivals, the Alster Fair is a celebration of culture, including dance, music, theatre, traditional food and drink, sporting events, crafts and, in fact, almost any cultural celebration you can imagine. Numerous events, activities and performances provide entertainment for all ages and the whole thing takes place on the banks of the lake. Part of the fair is the International Fireworks Festival that presents spectacular nightly fireworks displays which is a highlight for many of the families attending. There are usually four music stages which cover different genres of music late into the night, playing a range of things including rock, pop, golden oldies and jazz. Many restaurants, bars and stalls keep everybody extremely well fed and visitors can eat and drink under the stars on the banks of the lake. Another aspect of the festival is the popular International Alster Run which attracts participants from all over the world. The Alster Fair is big and its attractions are diverse which goes some way to explaining its success with so many different sorts of people; if you are in Hamburg during August or September attending this spectacular event is well worth your while.
