Knysna Oyster Festival
The Oyster Festival has established itself as one of the most popular annual events in the Western Cape and is a feast for oyster lovers and sport enthusiasts. Besides the famous mollusc, which can be sampled in a variety of forms at a number of wonderful Knysna venues, highlights of the festival include a mountain bike race, as well as the popular Knysna Forest marathon and half marathon. Other events include a street carnival, the Waterfront Food Fair, craft markets and a variety of other sporting events. In recent years the festival, already known as one of South Africa's premium sporting events, has added the gruelling Big Five Sports Challenge: a festival-long challenge which sees participants cycling and running both on the road and along beautiful nature trails, and paddling on the picturesque Knysna estuary; there are seven events and participants must enter five to qualify for the challenge. While adults are having fun eating, participating in sporting events, partying and enjoying more than 100 festival events, kids can enjoy a range of activities designed for their enjoyment in the Young Oyster Festival, where they will participate in sporting and culinary amusements of their own.
