Barcelona Summer Festival

The Barcelona Summer Festival, popularly known as the Grec Festival, is the cultural highlight of the city's summer calendar, and one of the most important arts festivals in the world. Every summer the city is filled with some of the finest national and international theatre, dance and music performances aimed at promoting different types of contemporary music and performance arts, as well as classical and ancient music and traditional acts. The festival takes its name from the main venue, the open-air Grec Theatre on Montjuic, which was built for the 1929 Universal Exhibition. Although this attractive venue was once the sole host of the festival, the programme now spills out to numerous venues and public spaces. Although there is an emphasis on showcasing and celebrating Catalan artists, there has increasingly been an international focus, and the festival now attracts some famous performers. For instance, musicians performing at the festival over the years have included the likes of Miles Davis, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, UB40, Joe Crocker, Chuck Berry and Santana. The Grec Festival is famed for its creativity and attracts a wide variety of visitors and locals. For more information email bcnfestival@mail.bcn.es
