Cannstatter Beer Festival

In terms of size, the Cannstatter Beer Festival in Stuttgart is second only to the Oktoberfest in Munich. Rows of beer lovers sing along to oompa band classics in large marquee tents, washing down their favourite golden liquid with tasty Swabian snacks. An exhilarating fairground is the setting with one of the world's biggest mobile Ferris wheels, reaching 198 feet (60m), as the backdrop. The celebration takes place over two weeks in the fall. Although often known as just the Beer Festival, the actual name of the event is The Cannstatter Volkfest as it is an autumnal fair with much more on offer than the famous beer. The festival began as a harvest celebration in 1818 when the royals gave out awards to the best farmers in the region. Today, over four million people attend and there are bumper cars, rollercoasters, fireworks, games, lots of traditional food and live entertainment in the jolly beer tents. Look out for the symbolic 'fruit column', a colourful wooden pillar, stretching 79 feet (24m) high and decorated with fruit, which has been an emblem of the Cannstatter Wasen for over a century. There is also a smaller spring version of the festival held at the same venue.
