Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival
The Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival brings an eclectic mix of people and sounds from around the world to Jakarta to celebrate jazz. The festival is relatively new but extremely popular and is successfully filling the founder's motto, "Bring the World to Indonesia". It is one of the largest jazz festivals in the world and almost certainly the largest in the southern hemisphere. It was first held in 2005 with immediate success and has been growing ever since. The festival attracts top acts from Europe and North America and has a loose interpretation of jazz, inviting everybody from hip hop groups to DJs. There is a special emphasis to highlight local music and support local musicians. The 2013 programme includes jazz greats like Jimmy Cliff, and big pop/jazz stars like Joss Stone. The programmes are designed to appeal to all age groups and jazz critics have noted with surprise and pleasure that even Indonesian teenagers seem to love and support the festival - which is unusual for a music genre that tends to attract an older crowd. Collaboration between international stars and Indonesian jazz musicians is encouraged and some exciting new material comes out of these experiments.
