Dubrovnik Carnival
Dating back to the 14th century, the Dubrovnik Carnival still upholds many of the same old traditions as it did centuries ago, which gives it a unique medieval flavour and sets it apart from many other carnivals around the world in that it is not just a big party (although it is still a big party!). People parade down the streets of Dubrovnik dressed in gaudy costumes while the sounds of drums and trumpets fill the air and events such as jousting competitions take place. Many masks are used during carnival and there are glorious masquerades. Locals dress up in all kinds of outfits and the Stradun bustles with games, music and festivities. Carnival is said to be the time when anything is allowed and, although it is probably better not to test this saying too stringently, there is no doubt that this is a fun time to visit Dubrovnik. The medieval city, with its stunning old architecture and rich history, is the best possible location for a carnival of this kind.
