Tips on travelling to Jamaica from Shenita Outland
Shenita has travelled extensively and has visited more than 40 percent of the Caribbean. Jamaica, particularly Negril, is one of her favourite destinations: her home away from home! She tries to visit at least once a year.

What is your favourite thing about Jamaica?
The locals. They make the island. They are friendly, hospitable and fun! The food and the beaches are also great.
Where would you send a first-time visitor in Jamaica?
Ocho Rios is a great destination for a relaxing beach holiday, and a good travel hub for excursions to interesting places nearby. Montego Bay is ideal for those who like the hustle and bustle of a coastal city, providing both beachy fun and urban amenities.
What are your favourite places and attractions in Jamaica?
Negril is the best! It is the home of the famous Seven-Mile Beach and a very vibrant nightlife. My favourite attractions in Jamaica include The Blue Hole, also called The Blue Lagoon (near Port Antonio) and Dolphin Cove (Ocho Rios).
Is there good infrastructure for tourists?
Yes. Tourism drives the economy. And generally long distances do not need to be travelled as Negril and Ocho Rios are only a short drive from the main airport in Montego Bay.
What is the best means of transport when exploring Jamaica?
Guided tours are probably the best option, particularly if wanting to explore outside the main resort areas, because the more rural roads can be tricky.
How safe is Jamaica for tourists?
It is very possible to have a safe, enjoyable time in Jamaica but travellers should exercise caution, as they should in any foreign environment. I do not recommend wandering around Kingston after dark. Travel via public transportation is not suggested either.
What are your favourite local meals?
Lobster and Ackee Fish.
Are there any parts of the country you would tell travellers to avoid?
No. However, I would suggest getting local advice or a local guide when exploring Kingston, instead of trying to tackle the city yourself.
What are the best souvenirs to buy in Jamaica?
Rum! And Jerk Spices.
How long would you recommend people spend in Jamaica on holiday?
At least four days, and longer if possible.
How expensive is Jamaica as a travel destination?
Looking at the Caribbean as a whole, Jamaica is definitely one of the more affordable, inexpensive destinations.
When is the best time to visit Jamaica?
Personally I enjoy October. Hurricane Season tapers off which makes for much better weather, and prices are lower. But another great time to go is August. The first week of August is when Jamaicans celebrate their Independence Day so the entire island is very lively.
