Lyme disease

What is it? A disease caused by tick-bites in the summer. Bites are characterised by ring shaped skin lesions, clear in the centre. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle tremors and headache. Central nervous system and other complications start within a a few weeks of the illness. How is it transmitted? Tick bite. Where is it present? Forests in Asia, north-western, central and eastern Europe, and the USA. Level of risk? Low. What can I do to prevent getting it? Avoid exposure to ticks. A vaccine is available in the USA. Treatment? Antibiotics.
