What is it? An animal virus that causes flu-like symptoms, coughing (initially dry), shortness of breath and diarrhoea. In severe cases respiratory failure can follow. How is it transmitted? When an infected person sneezes or coughs into the air or onto surfaces where the virus can live for days. Where is it present? China, Taiwan, Canada, Singapore, Vietnam. Level of risk? Low to zero. No reported cases since the global epidemic in 2003. What can I do to prevent getting it? Take the advice of the WHO or your foreign office issued in the event of a further outbreak.
