Rabies
What is it? A virus that causes symptoms ranging from a sense of apprehension, headache, fever, malaise and sensory changes around the site of the animal bite. Also common are excitability, hallucinations and aerophobia. Delirium, convulsions and death can follow a few days after onset. How is it transmitted? From the bite of an infected animal, usually a dog or bat. Where is it present? Worldwide. Most common in developing countries. Level of risk? Low, except in rabies-endemic areas. What can I do to prevent getting it? Get a vaccine and avoid contact with wild and stray animals, particularly dogs and cats. Treatment? Wash wound thoroughly with soap and water, then seek urgent medical attention for a rabies vaccine and antirabies immunoglobulin.
