Straddling the tropic of Capricorn, Australia is nearer to the equator than most people think. The south of Australia is temperate with seasonal variations, while the north (Queensland and the Northern Territory) is tropical with little change in climate from summer to winter. The summer weather in Australia's southern states and territories, including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, is very pleasant with midday temperatures in the mid-80s to 90s Fahrenheit (30s Centigrade) and little rain. Winter is less dependable, however, with regular rainfall and low temperature. August midday temperatures in Melbourne range from 56°F (13°C) to 72°F (23°C). Summer (October to March) is the busy tourist season, but the varied climate in Australia ensures that it is a popular travel destination throughout the year. |
