Airports in Bulgaria

Sofia International Airport (SOF)

Overview

Sofia Airport was built in the late 1930s, but has recently undergone a revamp with the addition of the modern Terminal 2. The airport is a central hub for many Eastern European carriers and serves over three million passengers annually.

Daily flights are available to London as well as cities across Europe. The airport is the largest airport in Bulgaria and houses a great selection of shops and restaurants. It is also the best airport to use when visiting the Black Sea Resorts, Balkan Mountains or simply the Byzantine beauty of Sofia.

Location

The airport is situated six miles (10km) east of Sofia.

Getting to the city

Regular bus service 84 runs on a frequent schedule day and night from the bus station close to Arrivals. Passengers will have to pay extra for large pieces of luggage. The journey takes 40 minutes on weekdays, and is slightly faster on weekends and holidays. Most hotels and tourist resorts run their own airport shuttles.

From there it progressed to the five terminal airport it is today, handling just over a million passengers per year. The airport has a number of cafés, and snack bars as well as great view points for passengers with a few hours to spare while waiting for their flights.

Passengers tend to use the airport as a great access point for many of Bulgaria's Black Sea resorts, including the popular Sunny Beach and Golden Sands resorts. The staff at this airport are friendly and efficient, ensuring a smooth start and end to your Bulgarian holiday.

Location

The airport is situated on the western outskirts, about five miles (9km) from Varna.

Getting to the city

Public bus 409, which passes through central Varna and travels as far as Golden Sands resort, serves the airport; departures are from in front of the VIP hall. Taxis are available in front of International Arrivals, but the meters are often not working and it is advisable to agree on a fare with the driver before departure. Many resort hotels run their own shuttle services to and from the airport.
