The climate of Colombia is tropical, marked by a great deal of wet weather. Summer is the main season for rain, although generally it is wet all year round. Being close to the equator, the low coastal areas of Colombia have high temperatures and high humidity, with little seasonal variation during the year. Rainfall on the coast averages 40 inches (1,000mm) per annum. In the interior the altitude of the mountains ensures cooler conditions which are also influenced by prevailing winds and the topography.
