Gabon Climate and Weather

Gabon has an equatorial climate with the year-round heat, humidity and heavy rainfall typical for tropical regions. There are no distinct seasons and the average daily temperature is about 81° F (27° C). The high humidity level (80 percent on average) makes it seem even hotter. The hottest month is January, when temperatures in the capital, Libreville, average between 88 °F (31 °C) and 73 °F (23 °C). There is virtually no rain between May and September, and December and January tend to be dry months, but the rest of the year sees heavy rainfall.

The long dry season, between May and September, is the best time to travel to Gabon weather-wise, because although it is hot, mosquitoes and other insects are at their least plentiful and the roads are more easily traversed when dry. However, many tourists travel to Gabon primarily to see the plentiful wildlife in the national parks and it is a good idea to check with the parks for information on seasonal wildlife migrations. Whale season runs from July to September and if you want to see turtles the best time to visit Gabon is between November and January when they come ashore to lay eggs.
