Indonesia Currency

Money

Rupiah (IDR) is the official currency and is issued in coins of IDR25, 50 and 100; and notes of between IDR500 and 10,000. Foreign currency can easily be exchanged at banks, hotels and money changers in major tourist destinations; US dollars is the most accepted currency. Be sure that your foreign bills are in good condition, as creased and torn notes may be refused. The best exchange rates in Indonesia are generally found in major centres like Jakarta and Bali. Be sure to doublecheck exchange rates, as those charged may be much higher than advertised, especially in Kuta.

Visa and Mastercard are accepted at more expensive hotels and restaurants, however smaller businesses may not have card facilities (especially in more remote areas liks Papua and Maluku). ATMs are available in main centres, and withdrawal limits range from IDR400,000 to two million; smaller towns may have an ATM, however it is best not to rely on this as it may be out of order. Small change is often unavailable so keep small denomination notes and coins for items like bus fares, temple donations and cool drinks.
