Malta International (MLA)
Overview
Malta International Airport is the only airport in Malta, making it the sole international gateway for the island group, located south of the Italian island of Sicily. Processing roughly three million passengers each year, the facility is located about three miles (5km) southwest of the capital city of Valletta.
The facility is small, but Malta International Airport has won several awards, including Best European Airport for 2010 in ACI's airport quality survey. There is a wide selection of shops and restaurants offering everything from fast food to designer watches.
Serving as the primary hub for Air Malta and a base for Ryanair, flights to Malta International Airport come in from destinations around Europe and Northern Africa, including Rome, Cairo, Paris, Frankfurt, Tripoli, London, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Tunis, Barcelona and Stockholm.
Location
The airport is situated three miles (5km) southeast of Valetta.
Getting to the city
Malta Airport has a system whereby passengers pre-pay before boarding a taxi. The taxi booth is situated in Arrivals, where the fare can be paid and a voucher obtained for presentation to the taxi driver. A regular bus service operates between the airport and Valetta; the journey time to Valetta is about 15 minutes.
