The climate in Alberta varies quite considerably, considering that the province stretches for 746 miles (1200km) from north to south and 373 miles (600km) from east to west. Southern Alberta tends to be semi-arid, with hot summers and low rainfall, while the northern part of the state tends to be colder. Winter Chinook winds bring warmer weather to the western areas, while southeastern Alberta has a more extreme temperature range - from −31°F (−35°C) or even lower in the winter, to 95°F (35°C) or higher in the summer. Winters are, on average, cold with heavy snowfall, particularly at higher altitudes (the Rockies particularly) and in summer, warm days tend to cool off closer to evening.
