Iowa's climate reflects its position deep in the interior of the continent. Winters are cold, with January temperatures averaging about 14°F (-10°C) in the northwest and 22°F (-6°C) in the southeast. It does snow but not as heavily as the other states. Des Moines, in the central part of the state, has a normal daily maximum temperature of 86°F (30°C) in July and a normal daily minimum of 10°F (-4°C) in January. The state averages 166 days of full sunshine a year and 199 cloudy or partly cloudy days.
