The Mississippi climate is hot and humid, with mild winters and long summers. There is little difference across the state in summer, with temperatures in July (the hottest month) averaging around 82°F (28°C). January is the coldest month, with average temperatures reaching about 48°F (9°C), though the Mississippi Sound region tends to be somewhat warmer than the rest of the state throughout the winter months. Humidity is usually highest between May and September and rainfall occurs throughout the year, with precipitation higher in the north than the south. The northern and central parts of the state can experience small amounts of snow, and tornadoes, hurricanes and thunderstorms are prevalent in late summer and autumn.
